We’ve had a lot of fun over the last couple of weeks around talking about giving gifts with our Enneagram Gift Guide … does that timing seem weird? I mean, it’s not close to Christmas or Mother’s Day or Valentine’s Day, those times when everybody seems to be talking about the “perfect gift.” (Don't worry, we're not going to give you a "shopping days" countdown or anything scary like that.)
Good news about a good gift
The fact is, the concept of gifts is a big part of EtchLife's heart. Could we "pull back the curtain" a bit and let you know why we do what we do? You might hear the Etch girls say they started this business to help themselves and others because they realized that it was so easy for us to think about God at church on Sunday or in personal times of Bible study, but leave Him behind as we continue into work, the school drop-off line, the grocery store, you know, the real stuff of life. Can you relate?
So Etch began out of a desire to help us all weave the Gospel into our everyday lives in a way that carves out more space for God to bring life transformation. And what we call the Gospel is good news about a good gift God has offered each one of us.
The first gift comes from God
Can we unwrap this gift a little bit for you? You see, each of us was born into a state of brokenness that began long before any of us were here. This brokenness, which we call "sin," is part of our nature and creates a divide between us and God, our perfect Heavenly Father who created us. We are all affected by it; the very Earth we live on is affected by it. Romans 6:23, the Bible says, "The wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord."
God created us out of an overflow of His love. But, like the verse above says, the wages -- or payment -- required for our sin is death. Of course, we all die a physical death, but this kind of death means separation from God even after we die. BUT. Our God is both just and loving, and wants to restore our connection with Him, and so, He sent us a gift.
God sent His Son, Jesus, to join us on Earth, to live a sinless life as a man, to teach, to show us how to love well, and eventually to die through crucifixion on a cross. Wait, how is this a gift, right?!? Because Jesus lived the perfect life we are unable to, God placed all the "wages of sin" that should have been ours onto Him. He took our punishment, and we get to share His status as beloved children of God. This is what John 3:16 means when it says, "For God so lovedthe world, that he gave his one and only son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life."
God offers this gift freely to everyone, and we only need to believe for it to be ours.
Learn it, Live it, Share It
As a response to the gift God has given us, we want to live lives that honor Him and to get to know Him better! But, like I said before, we realized it was way too easy for us to put God in a box as if He only belonged at church or at Bible study, when really our entire lives belong to Him. So every EtchLife product is created to be a touchpoint throughout the day, drawing our minds back to our Savior, helping us learn and live God's Word out by seeing it over and over as we carry it with us. The guiding scripture for EtchLife -- in fact, it's where our name comes from -- is Proverbs 7:3:
Write it out on the back of your hands;
etch it on the chambers of your heart.
Gifts in your hands to give God away
The cool thing about the gift God gives us is that it's not just for us, it's also meant to be given away to others. So we want to put gifts in your hands so you can give God away. There are so many opportunities to give gifts to family, friends, teachers, co-workers, neighbors. What if we were intentional about giving gifts that build others up in Christ? Whose life could be impacted? It's fun to dream about.
That's what we're here for, and if our products can in any way help with the work God is doing in your lives or the lives of others, we'd be delighted!
