Survival Guide for a Day Off School

Posted by Carrie Flener on

That's right.  We got the call 5 minutes after the alarm woke us up.  My phone rang announcing school had been cancelled.  It came as a surprise -- had I not watched the news the night before or checked the weather app in the last 24 hours?! I struggle handling my expectations.  What I had planned for today didn't line up with how things were playing out.  However, our weekend was super busy, so the thought of being "stuck" sounded a bit refreshing too. Unfortunately, my middle-schooler and I could not get back to sleep after "the call" and the...

4 Things I've Learned While Parenting a Tween

Posted by Carrie Flener on

I've dreaded this day since the day she was born.  Middle school.  It seems so daunting and scary and too much for this momma's heart to handle.  In middle school are boys and hormones and drugs and sex talks and....am I really ready for this!?! But God, in all his grace and love for me, has prepared me for this moment.  Fortunately, my oldest wasn't handed to me as a 12-year-old.  We've gone through a lot together and built a relationship that led to the middle school years.  And, while I'm still scared to death by all that is...

I live in a bubble. No joke…our little suburban town is filled with families in cushy houses and chasing youth sports.  The biggest stressor is busyness. Last week I had the opportunity to get outside of that comfort zone.  I stepped into a different world, a different way of life, and interacted with people who were different from me. Our church has a program — called Truth Seekers — that’s geared for 3rd through 5th graders.  Over the course of these three years, they are taught truth from Genesis to Revelation, they serve in our community, and love on people...

From a Daughter’s Perspective

Posted by Etch Life on

Okay… so let’s get real. My mom is the best. When I was younger I remember limping into her room all quiet like in attempts to get a glimpse of her preparing herself for the day. She always applied this one brown lipstick all in one swipe. I imagine she was stressed out (rightfully so) having 4 kids at home. She probably put it on because it made her feel beautiful. And oh my, did she look beautiful. My mom loves God. She sits in her bed every morning and hangs out with the Lord like it’s her best friend...
